Design for Manufacturing

This project had a simple premise: understanding the inter-dependency of design and manufacturing processes.

To analyze an existing product to determine the DFM metrics and document the process in detail & determine the strategies for producing a new product or review an existing product.

Category Manufacturing / Production Engineering

Timeline Monsoon 2022

Guides Sadasivan Iyer, Shrenee Dudhaiya

details

Understanding technical drawings & their role in the product development process was one of the key takeaways of this studio. Here you see my understanding of a showerhead, and a speculation of how it's production drawings may have been.

Factory & Industry Visits

Visits to 14 product design manufacturing facilities was undertaken to study the real-world applications of Design for Manufacturing.

Observe and research manufacturing processes such as Injection Moulding, Press Tools, CNC & Machining

Understand the applications and limitations of the technology and note potential areas of improvement.

Decoding the nuances of production processes in the Indian context - dealing with vendors, unions, labour laws and so on.

Production Planning for a  Showerhead

Injection Moulding Simulation SolidWorks® Plastics

Aims of the injection moulding simulation:

a. Understand the parameters required to make this part
b. Predict the defects by observing corresponding areas
of the real product, thereby verifying the process.
c. Propose an alternate method of moulding that
improves on either material parameters, machine
parameters or process parameters

Engineering process charts are boring! They are difficult to understand - for workers on the factory floor and shareholders in the boardroom. Could this be changed?

Why create process infographs?
a. Understand the crucial aspects of a process
b. Represent it appropriately - through content and
composition arrest the viewer and convey information fast

Story of the Logo

A play on the “recycle” icon, the logo symbolises how Design for Excellence plays an important role in a product’s life cycle. Taking in existing products and processes, tailoring them for excellence, and sending them back into the chain. It’s a shape— that communicates the dynamic nature of the process, easily adapted in different colours and sizes.
